KS wins architectural competition in Elinelund

Kjellander Sjöberg has, in collaboration with Veidekke Eiendom, won the land transfer competition in respect of Höbalen 2 plot in Elinelund in southern Malmö. The proposed residential scheme will become a beautiful addition to the neighbourhood, comprising three timber residential buildings forming a sheltered courtyard for everyone to meet, and with play in its foundation. The landscaping is to be modelled for both spontaneous and organised play, for both the livelier play of older children as well as the calmer play of younger ones.

The proposal draws its inspiration partly from traditional layouts of old villages, with allotments and farms, and partly from historic half-timbered houses. The ambition is to create a captivating residential environment with as little carbon footprint as possible, in line with the Local Roadmap for Climate Neutral Construction and Civil Engineering Sector in Malmö 2030 initiative, and to address issues related to social sustainability.

Jureskogs

Kjellander Sjöberg’s roadside restaurant for Jureskogs opens to the public. It is located next to the European road E4 close to Mjölby and is the first one in a series of restaurants proposed along the Swedish roads.

Jureskogs would like to alter the reputation of fast food and show that it could be both simple and of good quality, as well as fair and right for animals, the environment, wellbeing and health. This long-term approach to food can be also seen within the architecture itself. The ambition was to create a sustainable building of high architectural quality which resulted in a welcoming place employing natural materials both on the inside and outside. Materials that last and become more and more beautiful over time. A place where people want to stop and where the overhanging eaves above the veranda invite for staying outdoors as well indoors. The genuine, simple and relaxed characteristics are also manifested in the layout of the restaurant itself. Wooden pillars in a square grid create a spatial division for diverse seating arrangements with the kitchen is in the centre, allowing for direct interaction between chefs and guests.

It is a restaurant worth making a detour for.

KS wins competition to climate proof Faaborg in Denmark

Kjellander Sjöberg has, in collaboration with GHB Landskabsarkitekter, Mogens A. Morgen, Realise and Tyréns, won an invited competition to create a strategic development plan for Faaborg, a coastal town located on the island of Funen in southern Denmark, one of the oldest trading cities in the country. Faaborg is currently facing three major challenges – the port area is at high risk of flooding caused by the climate change, the historically and culturally valuable city centre needs to reinforce its connections to the surrounding landscape and the entire town suffers from a decrease in population. To address those, and to maintain the town’s strong position as an attractive urban environment and a tourist destination, the Faaborg municipality and Realdania jointly organized the competition, inviting three teams to participate in an open process which provided multiple opportunities for an open dialogue.

Jury’s statement: “The winning proposal “We grow Faaborg” ties the city together in the most beautiful way as well as bridges our past to the future with cultivation in its core; be it food, sport, wellness or art.”

Jureskogs opening soon

The construction of Jureskog’s first roadside restaurant, designed by Kjellander Sjöberg, has started. It is expected to open in January 2020.

The development of the concept for the restaurant has been characterized by a strong focus on sustainability and high quality throughout the whole process; from cooking with local produce to choosing timber as the construction material. It is an attempt to establish the slowest fast food by making conscious and long-term decisions. The same approach has formed the building itself, building with natural and sustainable materials. All in a warm, soft colour scale.

The restaurant is located in Mjölby, next to the European road E4, and is the first in a series of fast food restaurants with the best hamburgers along the Swedish roads.

Shop Talk 03: Media and architecture

Putting urban environments and buildings into perspective – from a historical, cultural and international point of view – can media contribute to a deeper and more nuanced discourse on what the built environment should or can do? On what expectations, dreams and basic requirements can we as citizens, users, developers, planners and politicians set? Debates on whether good architecture and urban design, seen as long-term sustainable, are important for the society and how can journalists and critics raise awareness of which processes and conditions create them? Broaden the discussion about which conflicts, economic frameworks and types of consensus are needed for the built environment to meet our needs – on beauty, function and belonging?

KS designs a community bench from recycled materials for Skåne Innovation Week

KS has been commissioned by Varvsstaden to design a seating bench with reuse and upcycling in focus. As a neighbourhood bench, it will contribute to the community feeling in the emerging area – first as a meeting point outside the Skåne Innovation hall during the ongoing Innovation Week, to afterwards become a permanent part of life on the street. The bench incorporates recycled material from Kockum and provides a new lease of life to the bricks and sheets of metal that were conserved after the industry was demolished. The seat is made of pine, to add a living material to the urban furniture. The Peab School in Malmö has worked on the pine and metal detailing, where the original metal sheets acting as backrests have been rounded off on top.

Two new KS publications

Arvinius + Orfeus Publishing is now releasing two new books by Kjellander Sjöberg. The two publications share a similar format and newspaper quality paper.

Commoning Kits is the catalogue of the exhibition curated by Kjellander Sjöberg at Form/Design Center in Malmö, displaying 13 proposals for how new meeting places can be created in order to generate and kick-start qualitative regeneration and community development in urban neighborhoods. The catalogue presents innovative prototypes designed to be used as toolkits in different settings and cities, based on local challenges.
