We are thrilled to present our recent competition proposal for Nötskrikan, a humble and sensible small-plot addition entwined in the urban fabric of central Borås. The ground floor is a publicly accessible patchwork of continuous stone surfaces, and the roofscape is an undulating extension of the adjacent park.

Floor plans are a means to dream of sustainable futures.

We approach the design process by asking questions about flexibility, context and inclusion, focusing on meetings between people and social interaction. A floor plan drawing can act as an instruction as well as a description. It is an attempt at order and a clear arrangement of exterior and interior spatial sequences, aspiring to provide conditions for a viable, sustainable, vibrant society for all.

Ylivieskan Kirkko
A church proposal providing unique indoor and outdoor social uplifting sacred spaces.

The design is based on arranging a sequence of rooms and places to gradually create a divine atmosphere and experience for the visitors.
The main round volume performs against the surrounding natural landscape, becoming an integral part of the core movement of the procession which organises all the larger surrounding places.

There are many important aspects to bear in mind when designing spaces.
Each should have a clear definition, providing enough space to both move freely as well as to be furnished for a comfortable life within.
The floor plan shows our residential infill Etaget on Kungsholmen. The spatial design was inspired by airy loft apartments with high ceilings and large windows, creating a mini-Manhattan in the middle of Stockholm.

When designing buildings and city blocks, we don´t have any uniform approach to “solving” them.
To a certain degree, they need to do the job themselves. They need to make sense and be based on sound and balanced decision-making. They should be user-friendly, provide clear orientation and way-finding; meet all the codes and regulations, be accessible and deliver good daylight conditions.

This layout shows our residential infill Etaget in Stockholm.

“Floor Plans” is our latest catalogue, fourth in the series.

It features a collection of 30 floor plans from different places, points in time and processes we have been fortunate enough to visit and take part in during the recent decades.
Floor plans provide us with ways to dream of sustainable futures, healthy built environments, flourishing communities and opportunities, as well as means of creating and constructing pragmatic proposals for a quality everyday life for everyone.

Scale towards sustainability

Presented in the context of the @swedishdesignmovement in Paris, the ‘Scale towards sustainability’ exhibition addressed the climate change through two different scales, featuring two of KS’s ongoing projects: the transformation of Gjuteriet in Malmö and the new emerging masterplan for Meridian Water in London.
The exhibition displayed recycled and upcycled industrial materials, such as this sheet metal sample, recovered during demolitions; harvested, cleaned and collected in a central library in one of the existing sheds of @Varvsstaden.

Active roofs integral to the landscape

Roofscapes are man-made landscapes accessible for wildlife, birds and insects, as well as habitable places for residents.
This elevated realm can serve as an important part of built urban fabrics, both as a place for neighbourly community to reinforce its social connections within buildings and adding green qualities to adjacent streetscapes.

Everyday street

We see a future where city life is informed primarily by the pedestrian and bicycle perspective, speed and scale.
The whole block has a carefully designed interface with the street with added depth and subdivision into smaller areas to create a variation for pedestrians and cyclists.

A mountain hotel

The layout is an assembly of individual cubical volumes separated by voids, establishing a dialogue with the interior space and bringing filtered daylight to the core. The rooms are characterised by a strong sense of privacy, providing a direct contact with the surrounding natural landscape.

Today’s society has a unique opportunity: to imagine and create built environments and contemporary, inclusive lifestyles, that exist within nature and resource constraints. The search is on for new forms of human settlement, business, and culture based on long-term visions and adaptive potential.
