Guidebook

This is the title of a new book in Russian with 120 fact-filled pages, that tells the story of Swedish architecture and design history, focusing on events and institutions that have shaped it and presents a selection of the most influential players of today.

– Russia is a growing market for both Swedish design industry and Swedish architects. With this book we hope to increase awareness of Sweden and we hope to contribute to an increased exchange of culture and knowledge between our countries, says Gustaf Kjellin.

The texts in the book are written by Daniel Golling and Gustaf Kjellin. The book is produced by Summit with the support of the Swedish Embassy in Moscow, Semrén & Månsson, Senab, Stockholm Visitors Board and Sweco.

KS invited to Urban Futures Forum

Round table conversation on new possibilities for sustainable urban development

Kjellander Sjöberg is invited to participate in The Copenhagen Urban Futures Forum to share their knowledge and expertise in sustainable urban development. The organizers are the Danish Ministry of the Environment together with Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and Future Perfect. The Forum is an interactive discussion and consultation with the aim to reach hands on recommendations: liveability and urban form, resource efficiency, climate adaptation, infrastructure, cooperation and sustainable lifestyles.

“We are facing enormous challenges both environmentally and economically, and I truly believe that a greener economy with more focus on resource efficiency, effective solutions for handling climate change, and an overall focus on sustainability is the way forward. It is clear that our cities will be incredibly important in implementing green economy in our everyday lives. Urbanism – the design, development, inhabitation and adaptation of cities – has, across the 20th and early 21st century, become the terrain where most of society’s questions converge. Copenhagen and Denmark have become associated with successful answers to these questions, pioneering models of urban morphology, lifestyle, and economics, blended with long-term commitments to sustainable infrastructure and energy, and social justice and progress.

The Copenhagen Urban Futures Forum is an informal, high-level roundtable on new options for sustainable urban living, to be held Monday 7 October, 2013 for around 40 invited guests in Copenhagen. The event is a consultation initiative of the Danish Ministry of the Environment (MIM) in collaboration with Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), Resource Vision sustainable architects, and the Futureperfect Association (Sweden). Support is also received from the U.S. Embassy to Denmark.

Light Houses – Young Nordic Architecture

Kjellander Sjöberg at the Architecture and Design Centre

Light Houses presents thirty Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish architecture firms. The architects were invited to create a model of a conceptual “house” that reflects their personal philosophy of architecture. The exhibition also highlights current social and environmental themes, looking at the economic constraints and diminishing environmental resources that challenge architects all over the world in their efforts to achieve maximum quality in their designs. The objects are complemented by the architects’ own texts.

The exhibition is an updated version of the joint Nordic exhibition made for the Architecture Biennale in Venice 2012 and is displayed from 15th of October until 16th of February 2014 at the Architecture and Design Centre in Stockholm.

Seminar: “How do we create a homely atmosphere in the future?”

The question is posed to the architects Stefan Sjöberg and Anders Nyquist and art historian Maja Willén. The seminar is led by design and architecture critic Annica Kvint – one of three curators who created the current exhibition at Liljevalch’s – Home Sweet Home.

The panel consists of the art historian Maja Willén, who has researched open floor plan layouts, architect Anders Nyquist, who is a specialist in recycling architecture since 45 years, and architect Stefan Sjöberg from Kjellander Sjöberg, who designs homes for the major urban development projects, Norra Djurgårdsstaden and Järva.

9th of September, 18:00 – 20:00.

Doors open from 17:00 with the opportunity to see the exhibition Home Sweet Home before the seminar begins.

Stefan Sjöberg on future of housing

Home Sweet Home is an artistic interpretation of Swedish and international design icons and their style ideals. With an unpretentious but elegant mix of high and low, cheap and expensive, the exhibition advocates inspiration instead of consumption with the aim of a sustainable future.

In conjunction with the exhibition Home Sweet Home, Stefan Sjöberg, Graham Hill, Karin Bradley and Clara Lindström were interviewed by the exhibition’s producer Annica Kvint. In the article, Back to the Future, Stefan Sjöberg talks about future of housing and how concepts and lifestyle is in competition with sustainability and function.

Pro dialogue: Architecture & Cities

Kjellander Sjöberg participates in the year’s Futureperfect festival on Grinda.

Pro Dialogues is a series of short presentations by speakers with expertise in their respective areas. An exchange of experiences, talks about the challenges and potentials that exist today and in the future. The seminar welcomes all professionals and individuals who are interested in sustainability in architecture and planning.

The role of architecture and cities in making a sustainable society could not be more central. The built environment is not only the single most intensive concentration of materials that society manipulates – including carbon, and energy, minerals, water, waste, and biomass – but it sets the patterns by which people live the their daily lives.

New ways of living, and new systems for the management of materials, natural resources and systems, and business models, are all emerging now in architecture and city design. The speakers will lead us through their work in these areas, and discuss the challenges and opportunities along the road ahead. Some of these include the rebuilding of Kiruna City Centre, a food-focussed block in Årstafältet, using bees to reinforce urban ecosystem resilience, and more.

Light Houses – Young Nordic Architecture

Kjellander Sjöberg exhibits at the Museum of Finnish Architecture

This year’s summer exhibition at the Museum of Finnish Architecture features young Nordic architects. The exhibition is a comprehensive presentation of contemporary Nordic architecture. Through the work of 32 young architects and architectural firms the exhibition shows that contemporary Nordic architecture has an exemplary way to approach contemporary global challenges. The Nordic architecture’s traditional characteristics – straightforward design and sober use of materials, taking into account natural light, natural environment and context – represents in itself the principles of responsible and sustainable architecture.

During the summer of 2013, the exhibition, which premiered at the 13th International Architecture Biennale in Venice 2012, will be shown in Helsinki with a broader content.

The exhibition will be shown from 5th of June until 22nd of September 2013 at the Museum of Finnish Architecture in Helsinki.

Nordic Architects – Ebbs & Flows

Ebbs & Flows, the second volume of Nordic Architects, features the work of 60 leading offices in the Nordic architectural scene. Showcasing their latest works, including unbuilt competition entries, this book gives an incomparable view of the present and future of the new wave in Nordic architecture. Through interviews with all the architects, author David Sokol explores the questions and ideas most relevant to Nordic architecture today. The book features Kjellander + Sjöberg’s projects Annedalsterrassen, Tornhuset, Västra Johannelund and Snäckan.

Dream houses at von Echstedtska Gården

KS exhibiting at Värmlands Museum

In the summer exhibition “Glasklara minnen i drömhus och landskap” (Crystal-clear memories in dream homes and landscapes) at the von Echstedtska Gården in Värmland, KS creates a temporary installation in collaboration with I Ingalena Klenell.

“A new pavilion designed for future memories that reflect themselves in the old dam from the 1700s. A house to dream in, a little house, almost an outdoor space, with flexible and light nuances and shifts between outside and inside, to be made of environmentally friendly and sustainable materials.”

The exhibition opens on Sunday, 26th May 2013 at 1 pm by the chairman of the Värmlands Museum, Philip Johnsson.

The exhibition is open 26th May – 25th August 2013, Tuesday – Sunday, 11 am – 6 pm.

What, where and for whom do we build?

KS berättar om kvaliteter i planering och bostadsbyggande!

Ola Kjellander och Stefan Sjöberg är inbjudna att tala och delta i diskussion om stadsbyggnad och bostäder på Färgfabriken den 17:e april.

Under 2012 blev vi närmare hundra personer fler i Storstockholm – varje dag. Var ska våra nya grannar bo? Det byggs nya enklaver och det kompletteras i befintliga stadsstrukturer. Hur förvaltas det platsspecifika i förverkligandet av Promenadstaden? Vilka framsteg har gjorts inom bostadsbyggandet det senaste decenniet? Vad bygger vi nu? Hur uppnås en långsiktig hållbarhet i såväl arkitektur som i byggnadernas utformning? Vem bygger vi för? Förändrade hushållssammansättningar och ett förhållandevis homogent bostadsbestånd ger utmaningar för nybyggandet. Vi har ett gyllene tillfälle att komplettera med bostadstyper som saknas. Hur förvaltas den möjligheten? Vad behöver vi för bostäder?

KS lecture on urban design

Stadsbyggnadskontoret i Stockholm

KS var i veckan inbjudna av Stadsbyggnadskontoret i Stockholm för att diskutera begreppet stad på temat:

Vad är en stad? Vad skapar en stad?

Det blev ett öppet samtal kring stadsstruktur och “byar i staden” – stadsdelars inbördes relation och förhållande till staden i stort.

Exemplet som KS presenterade var det urbana, historiska London, vars framväxt och kraftiga expansion 1700-1830 lade fast stadens nuvarande karaktär och struktur. London visar på en utveckling baserad på spekulationsekonomi, utveckling på privat mark med arrende, marknadsstyrd planering och bostadsbyggande. Parallellt finns ett tydligt fokus på skala, detaljering och väl avvägda stadsrum. Gränsen mellan det privata och offentliga är tydlig.

Föreläsningens fokus låg på stadsrum, stadskvalitéer och hur kända typologier kan bygga upp en stadsstruktur med innehållsmässig flexibilitet.

Efterföljande diskussion blev intressant och givande, den handlade om hur en stadsstruktur (urban fabric) kan etableras och om behovet av gemensamma planeringsprinciper och spelregler. Bebyggelse som speglar en “common ground” – en gemensam grundsyn och kultur.
