KS and KOGAA shortlisted for a competition in Czechia

Kjellander Sjöberg and KOGAA have been shortlisted for the second phase of an architectural competition to revitalize a former sugar refinery in Nové Šlapanice in Czech Republic. The competition is organised by the local municipality and the council’s ambition is to create a new social and cultural centre for the town through high-quality placemaking, creating an attractive destination for the public with a wide range of services for the community. The secondary programmes comprise a wellness facility, senior housing and a medical practice.

KS and KOGAA have an ongoing collaboration which started in 2017 in Brno and for this competition put together an international team with Open Fabric landscape architects based in Milan and Rotterdam and PK Ossendorf from Brno.

KS wins in Växjö

Kjellander Sjöberg, in collaboration with GBJ Bygg, has won the development competition for Vinden 1 in Bredvik, Växjö, southern Sweden. The point of departure for the design was the characteristic landscape of the Småland region. The scheme comprises eight semi-detached houses promoting a child-friendly and car-free lifestyle and faces a new main cycle path through Vaxjö with a bicycle pavilion.

The layouts have been designed for a pleasant social life at home, with everyday clutter collected in a clear hallway zone and on the first floor. Every housing unit is provided with a private courtyard which is directly connected to a shared green grove where adults can meet at allotment gardens and children can easily sneak to the neighbour.

The architectural expression is inspired by traditional timber towns where buildings stand close to the street and are articulated in natural colour tones with well-crafted details, whilst being clearly framed by a wooden fence.

KS Shop 06: Floor Plans

We would like to invite everyone passing the KS Studio Malmö to visit our latest exhibition Floor Plans. We have selected a series of 32 drawings from various times, locations and processes the KS team worked with over the years.
The aim is to investigate how a floor plan can function as a tool and how we, one room at a time, design architectural solutions for human interactions. We approach this by asking ourselves a number of key questions regarding flexibility, context, social inclusion and sustainability. A floor plan is a map, an endeavour to create order and organise exterior and interior spatial sequences. An instruction as well as a depiction; with the hope of viable and long-term vibrant communities for all.

The exhibition is open from 30th June in our KS Shop, Engelbrektsgatan 7 in Malmö.

Keystone of future Kista

The new local masterplan for Kista äng in northern Stockholm was granted planning permission in March 2020 and the development has now commenced. The area will be transformed into a mixed neighbourhood where housing, commercial facilities and public spaces will create a vibrant urban environment for the residents as well as visitors of Kista.
Kjellander Sjöberg has designed a residential scheme together with SKB (Stockholm housing co-operative). Within a walking distance from the underground station, a total of 163 rental units ranging from one to six room apartments will be delivered across three interlinked building volumes, 4 to 8 storeys high, providing office and retail spaces on the ground floor facing Torshamnsgatan and Borgarfjordsgatan.
The project puts emphasis on delivering high quality new homes. The main feature of the overall design is choosing premium materials, creating excellent living standards both indoors and outdoors sustainable in the long term. The block will become a keystone in the local masterplan, comprising residential buildings, schools, public squares, and local parks.

The designs are being detailed and the construction start is due Q1 2022.

1st prize in Snurrom

Kjellander Sjöberg, in collaboration with We Construction, has won the development competition for Snurrom in Kalmar, south-eastern Sweden. The team has been appointed to further develop the design proposal for a new residential scheme with high ambitions and comprehensive ideas for innovation. The project focuses on sustainable technologies, protecting local biotopes, enhancing social opportunities for all age groups and a detailed architecture alluding to local traditions.
The site is in the northern part of the city of Kalmar and is closely connected to natural recreational places in the adjacent forest and by the sea; elements which inspired the design. The key feature of this project is smart landscaping – green mounds concealing a semi-basement car parking and reaching all the way up to the ground floor level and terraces. From an office block to a city block

The Reykjavik 1 property is located in Kista in northern Stockholm. Kjellander Sjöberg has, together with Nordika Properties, developed a proposal, transforming the existing office block into a vibrant urban neighbourhood along the Borgarfjordsgatan street. The site has a strategic position in the overall revitalisation of Kista; from being predominantly a business district with strong separation caused by traffic into a mixed urban environment with vibrant streets and potential for a rich city life.

The proposal comprises a school, new residential units, an elderly care, multitude of services and retail, all flexible for being adapted to a new programme over time. The project mixes the current volumes with new ones, creating a lively neighbourhood that has a positive impact on the urban qualities of Kista.

The public hearing for the new local development plan proposal will run until 6th June.

Business environments of tomorrow in Lund

Kjellander Sjöberg has been invited by the Lund Municipality to bring new views and ideas on how urban fabric could be formed to encourage local development, growth and positive business climate of the future. Including the research institutions ESS and MaxVI by the Science Village, the area is a source of urban innovation towards a smarter and more sustainable society. How can we expand on the existing visions to attract long-term commercial enterprises?
We can still only imagine where and how will we work when the pandemic is over, but one thing is clear. Flexibility will be essential. But what kinds of new economic models for sustainability will there be and what will an inclusive workplace cluster look like in the future? We begin our conceptual work with a step inside the garage workshop to closely investigate industrial buildings and sheds as an established architectural typology. Could a building’s significance, being an iconic place for start-ups and entrepreneurship, become a foundation for urban development of an innovation district of the future where businesses and institutions are founded and grow over time?

The current discourse needs more examples of structures suitable for dense city environments, perceived as rich both in terms of the urban fabric as well as local work opportunities. A stimulating discussion about how urban functions and public meeting places could benefit more people and communities. New voices advocating local initiatives that can bring prosperity and an improved quality of life for the entire neighbourhood.

Long-term sustainable business ventures in the urban environment require innovation and flexible strategies on a structural level. Future of sustainable housing in Malmö

The smart, energy-efficient residential scheme Solkvarteret nears its completion in Malmö’s south-western district of Hyllie. It has been developed in a close collaboration between Kjellander Sjöberg, E.ON, Lansa and Serneke, comprising 106 architecturally climate-efficient apartments.

The main design objective was to create Malmö’s most user-friendly and intelligent housing. The residents will experience how easy it is to play a part in resource consciousness and sustainable lifestyle, facilitated by diverse integrated technical and architectural solutions. Lifts generate electricity when in use and to be able to measure and continuously optimize the energy use, the entire property will be connected to a management cloud service.

Environmentally conscious and long-term sustainable smart material choices have guided the whole design process whilst providing for green meeting places and urban farming were a given. Sustainable housing of the future combines technical innovations with architectural design. It will age beautifully over time, appreciated both by the residents as well as passers-by.

Completion is due in Q2 2023 when residents will move in.
