KS in Cologne to discuss circular construction

KS Malmö Director Johan Pitura has been invited to partake at the ‘19th Federal Congress on National Urban Development Policy’, being held 14-16 September in Cologne, Germany. The congress – titled ‘Act together, act faster, think further: shaping cities for everyone’ – will address how cities and communities can respond to growing pressures and overlapping crises, exploring new ways of working that enable planning and transformation to happen more quickly, collaboratively and in the common interest.

Johan Pitura will participate in the breakout session ‘Circular construction in practice – implementation support for municipalities’, organised by Baukultur Nordrhein-Westfalen e.V., on Wednesday 16 September. The session will explore how re-use and recycling are transforming the building sector, focusing on deconstruction, the certification of re-used components and the development of material cycles.

The congress is arranged by The Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building, in cooperation with the Conference of German Building Ministers, the Association of German Cities (Deutscher Städtetag) and the German Association of Towns and Municipalities (DStGB). It will be held from 14th to 16th September 2026 at the Palladium in Cologne and other locations.

More at Årstafältet

Kjellander Sjöberg, together with Nordr, is now taking the next step towards delivering new homes in the first phase of Årstafältet transformation. Sales are scheduled to launch in spring 2027. The masterplan, adopted in 2017, forms a part of Stockholm’s new Parkstaden Årstafältet neighbourhood, which will comprise 8,000 new homes when fully developed.

The homes are situated along a green local street, close to Årsta Torg and the inviting 25-hectare neighbourhood park. The area is connected by green urban spaces and new walking and cycling routes, with play areas, shops and local services all within easy reach.

Kjellander Sjöberg is developing the architecture for an apartment building comprising 28 homes, as well as 13 terraced houses, each three-storey high and with its own roof terrace. Both volumes are articulated in brick, with a warm colour palette and a distinct architectural expression that sets them apart while allowing them to speak the same architectural language.

The local street transitions gently from hard paving with tree planting to green private gardens, whilst maintaining a clear distinction between public and private space. Urbio is responsible for the landscape architecture, and together the buildings and green spaces create an inviting whole.

Parkstaden Årstafältet thus takes a further step toward becoming a fully integrated part of Stockholm’s urban fabric – and one of the most anticipated additions of new homes in the southern parts of the city.

Essensen on Lilla Essingen

Kjellander Sjöberg, together with Klövern, is developing some of Stockholm’s most exceptionally situated new homes: Västra Essensen and Östra Essensen in the Primus area of Lilla Essingen. The place is rapidly evolving into a vibrant urban neighbourhood, with new quality homes, a waterfront promenade, generous parks, play areas, an outdoor gym, a boat club, a beach, bathing jetties, cafés and restaurants. Both schemes offer the opportunity to live in a unique waterfront setting within central Stockholm, forming a new relationship between the city, the park and Lake Mälaren.

The project comprises three linear residential buildings facing the water, with open courtyards between them, forming Östra Essensen. Further south, a curved residential building, Västra Essensen follows the shape of the shoreline. Both will deliver 90 new homes, with views towards Primusparken and the evening sun setting over Lake Mälaren.

The architecture is rooted in the character of the site, utilising solid, robust materials in calm, light tones that respond to the changing light across the water. The layouts are designed to adapt over time, with well-connected spaces and an abundance of natural daylight.

The project’s design development stage has been completed, and the launch of sales is currently being planned.

Indigo with a view

Kjellander Sjöberg are continuing to develop Telefonplan in Stockholm together with Klövern. In this creative neighbourhood, with the Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design, and Södermalm within easy reach, the final residential schemes are now taking shape. The industrial heritage fabric of the area, including Ericsson’s former industrial buildings, provide a distinctive, rustic character. It is also home to Ericsson’s former staff canteen, whose blue metal-panel façade will be preserved and integrated into the new building.

The building will comprise 65 bright homes with views, along with a ground floor featuring unique studio apartments and spaces for local urban life.

A planning application has been submitted, with sales of the homes scheduled to launch in September–October 2026.

Nyhamnen cultural heritage strategy

Kjellander Sjöberg and Restaurera have been commissioned by the City of Malmö to carry out a comprehensive heritage assessment, and a conservation and development strategy for Polstjärnan 1 with its adjacent sites – the next major step in the urban regeneration of Nyhamnen.

The sitewide regeneration strategy for Frihamnen takes a holistic, area-wide approach to shaping a neighbourhood with a distinct identity, close to both the waterfront and the city, and firmly rooted in the harbour’s industrial heritage. The area contains characteristic industrial environments of significant heritage value, which will be carefully preserved and adapted for future use.

The Polstjärnan phase aims to transform the site into a mixed-use scheme comprising housing, offices, a park, a public square, a preschool, a mobility hub and small-scale businesses. The main ambition is to establish a robust urban fabric for a climate-neutral, cultural heritage driven and innovative district built on circular construction and reuse strategies.

Ekelund Pampas secures planning approval

The masterplan for the Ekelund Pampas urban regeneration has now been formally adopted by the City of Solna. The project will create a vibrant new neighbourhood with a distinct identity and strong architectural character, set in a prime waterfront location by Pampas Marina, within walking distance of Kungsholmen and central Stockholm.

This first phase – linking Solna and Stockholm – is being developed by HSB and Besqab through a joint venture and comprises approximately 800 new homes, with construction scheduled to begin in 2028.

Since winning the design competition in 2016, Kjellander Sjöberg, lead architect for both the masterplan and the residential plots, has guided the project through to this important milestone. Inspired by the site’s dramatic topography, the neighbourhood is shaped around rock, valley and water, using natural materials, active streets and a waterfront environment that brings together people, urban amenities and recreation. The result is a place-specific neighbourhood offering enduring, high-quality living environments and attractive homes by the water.

Vibrant residential neighbourhood in Solna

Södra Hagalund in Solna is undergoing a major transformation. The emerging neighbourhood will deliver new homes, retail, workplaces, cultural facilities and local amenities. Besqab and Alfa Development have jointly acquired development rights for approximately 400 homes, with Kjellander Sjöberg appointed as architects.

The Gelbgjutaren site is covered by an adopted planning consent for new homes arranged around a shared landscaped courtyard. The goal is to create a residential development that is sustainable in the long term, with strong social values, high architectural quality and attractive living environments. The scheme will be delivered in four phases, incorporating a mix of housing tenures to appeal to a broad range of residents and foster a vibrant, inclusive neighbourhood. Construction is scheduled to commence in 2027.

Margo – the first planning application for Årstafältet

With the submission of the first planning application, Parkstaden Årstafältet takes a significant step from vision to reality. Kjellander Sjöberg, in collaboration with Wallin Bostad, has submitted the first planning application for Phase 1 of a major development that will deliver 8,000 new homes, a 25-hectare park and two new underground stations. Sales are expected to launch in autumn 2026, with construction scheduled to begin around the turn of the year.

The residential scheme Margo comprises 110 homes across seven building volumes, each with its own distinct character. By combining geometric patterns with a calm colour palette, the design creates a visual balance between order and spontaneity. Margo draws its identity from the meeting of the urban and the natural. Located directly on the edge of the neighbourhood park and beside two ponds, with boardwalks and pedestrian routes, the development offers a strong sense of urban living while providing immediate access to nature.

Centred around a spacious and welcoming courtyard, the scheme places a strong emphasis on urban gardening, complemented by shared amenity spaces and ground-floor commercial premises for shops, restaurants and local services.

LandArk is responsible for the landscape design, and Noccon has been appointed as the main contractor.

New homes in Hjorthagen

We are delighted to announce that the competition for Rådjursstigen and Villebrådet has now been approved, following a competitive selection process in 2025. Wallin Bostad in collaboration with Kjellander Sjöberg were selected as the winning team and awarded two of the four residential plots.

Set in a lush green urban setting in Stockholm, where Hjorthagen meets Norra Djurgårdsstaden, the project will deliver 80 new homes across two buildings. The scheme is characterised by ambitious sustainability targets and a carefully considered architectural approach, balancing high-quality residential qualities with respect for the site’s rich natural and cultural heritage.

The project has now passed the consultation stage of the planning process, and we look forward to continuing the work ahead of the planned construction start in 2029.
