Groupings exhibition at the Southern Sweden Design Days 2022

We are opening our Work Shop in Malmö between 19 – 22 May, presenting the ’Groupings’ exhibition as a part of the Southern Sweden Design Days 2022. The exhibition displays precedents by invited Swedish and UK practices: Mae Architects, Mareld Landskap, IF_DO, Mole Architects, We Made That and Fisher Cheng.

The theme for this year’s Southern Sweden Design Days is ‘Proximity’. KS’s exhibition highlights how do we experience urban settings at various scales. Could local affiliation and identity have a positive impact on how we use the public realm? Is the ‘we experience’ based on geographical proximity or is it a community founded on shared culture and values? The notions of ’group’ and ’groupings’ are examined on different scales such as neighbourhood, district, block, institution, urban park, workplace and home.

KS arranges a seminar about wood construction in Malmö

The construction industry in the Nordic countries has always been closely related to wood. How did we build before the modern construction techniques such as cross-laminated boards, glued laminated timber frames, steel brackets and CNC milling machines?

In collaboration with Tränätverk A, KS organizes a seminar to discuss fundamental questions associated with wood construction, such as assessing the quality of wood and various types of joinery informed by the terms and conditions of wood as a material. The invited guests are Sofie Campanello from Fabel Arkitektur and Jakob Nilsson from Gögalunds Såg & Hantverk.

Tränätverk A is a platform for architects and other specialists to bring up and discuss topics. By sharing inspiration, experiences and projects across different professions, the whole industry benefits and the development of wood construction can advance.

KS Shop 06: Floor Plans

We would like to invite everyone passing the KS Studio Malmö to visit our latest exhibition Floor Plans. We have selected a series of 32 drawings from various times, locations and processes the KS team worked with over the years.
The aim is to investigate how a floor plan can function as a tool and how we, one room at a time, design architectural solutions for human interactions. We approach this by asking ourselves a number of key questions regarding flexibility, context, social inclusion and sustainability. A floor plan is a map, an endeavour to create order and organise exterior and interior spatial sequences. An instruction as well as a depiction; with the hope of viable and long-term vibrant communities for all.

The exhibition is open from 30th June in our KS Shop, Engelbrektsgatan 7 in Malmö.

Shop Talk 05: Reimagining the urban workplace

Local growth, innovation and opportunities

There is a great potential in the development of future urban environments. Creating conditions for mixed activities and movement flows informed by the sense of community is one of them. Another example could be innovation clusters and workplace districts fit for new economic models. How could a neighbourhood be shaped to promote long-term sustainable and diverse businesses? What might be the programmatic content for innovative urban structures where various social forces cooperate?

Margarethe Theseria, Jacobs, London
Nanette Weisdal, Briq Group, Copenhagen
Eva Dalman, Stadsbyggnadskontoret, Lund Municipality
Ib Rosvall, Kommunkontoret, Lund Municipality

The current discourse needs more examples of structures suitable for dense city environments, perceived as rich both in terms of the urban fabric as well as local work opportunities. A stimulating discussion about how urban functions and public meeting places could benefit more people and communities. New voices advocating local initiatives that can bring prosperity and an improved quality of life for the entire neighbourhood.

Long-term sustainable business ventures in the urban environment require innovation and flexible strategies on a structural level. How can the city be organised for businesses to thrive and grow over time? Could some of the answers be found through highlighting other topics, such as integration, equality and democracy?

KS Shop 05: Transformation of architectural heritage

We would like to invite you to a windowsill vernissage of our exhibition about Gjuteriet, exploring how a culturally significant historical building could be regenerated and given a new life. The exhibition opens on 8th February in the KS Shop in Malmö.

The transformation of Gjuteriet is an ongoing project of KS, commissioned by Varvsstaden AB. The building was originally built in 1910 as a foundry for casting machine parts for Kockums’ ships and bridges. Nowadays it is one of the most prominent architectural heritage landmarks in Malmö. Its regeneration presents an opportunity to ask questions about how we approach historical industrial buildings and how could we create balance between preservation and adaptation to our time with different needs and conditions. How reusing the existing structures and buildings could lead to a more sustainable architecture with a reduced environmental impact.

KS Shop 04: Forgotten Spaces of the Skåne County

KS is proud to host the ‘Forgotten Spaces of the Skåne County’ exhibition in the Malmö Shop. The exhibition highlights industrial heritage and the significance of production as an essential element in the history of our cities. What remains today in the form of genuine and inspiring environments are unique assets that can be used in many ways and new contexts. Conservation and transformation developments provide opportunities for a better anchoring in the place and inspiring experiences, forming conditions for local economies to thrive, creating new workplaces and meeting points. Global sustainability goals can be achieved through recycling and transformation, a more resource-conscious and socially sustainable approach.

The exhibition is organised by Kjellander Sjöberg, using material from the newly published book ‘Forgotten Spaces of the Skåne County’ by Carl Bergendorffs (orig. Skånes glömda rum).

The book illustrates the heyday of industrialism in Skåne County through 250 unique colour images and personal reflections on the historic events from the middle of the 19th century to the present day. The mining industry, shipbuilding and manufacturing, peat harvesting, sowing, production of lime and cement as well as sugar industry and SSA, once the largest company in Sweden, all come to life again in this book. At a time when our port and industrial areas are being transformed into attractive residential areas, the book is a retrospect of what is now disappearing at a rapid pace. More than half of the settings covered have been demolished or transformed; most of them never shown in print before.

KS Shop 03: Faaborg

We are delighted to announce the opening of our Faaborg exhibition. The vernissage will take place on 16th September 2020 in the KS Shop in Malmö.

Faaborg is a coastal town located on the island of Funen in southern Denmark, one of the oldest trading cities in the country. Faaborg is currently facing three major challenges. It needs to immediately focus on the high risk of flooding caused by the climate change, the historically and culturally valuable city centre needs to reinforce its connections to the surrounding landscape, and the entire town suffers from a decrease in population. To address those, and to maintain the town’s strong position as an attractive urban environment and a travel destination, the Faaborg municipality and Realdania jointly organized a competition with the aim to create a strategic development plan for the city. Three invited teams participated in an open process which provided multiple opportunities for an open dialogue.

Kjellander Sjöberg has won the competition in collaboration with LYTT Architecture, Mogens A. Morgen, Realise and Tyréns.

Shop Talk 04: Meanwhile Use

How can we unlock the community potential of unused spaces?

For instance, by transforming and reusing former industrial buildings, creating pop-up parks or temporary urban community gardens on previous industrial sites?

Such unused or underused spaces are often referred to as “meanwhile” as they are interim solutions, ways to rejuvenate spaces while waiting for long-term development plans or construction to commence.

Guests:
Jonathan Goring, U + I, London (UK)
Jenny Grettve, Director of Jenny Grettve Studio, Malmö (SE)
Tom Holbrook, Director of 5th Studio, London (UK)
Claudia Alex Laroux, Director of Culture of Tunnelfabrikken, Copenhagen (DK)
Kieran Long, Director of ArkDes, Stockholm (SE)
Johan Pitura, KS Malmö  Director, Malmö (SE)

Date: 27th May

More often today meanwhile strategies play a significant role in defining character for placemaking and identity in developing urban districts. Due to new consumer and citizen demands, businesses, retail and creative start-ups have an increasing desire for unusual spaces and authenticity. As for urban planning and regeneration projects, these existing structures or spaces offer a potential for a more organic and sustainable growth, incorporating a slower and more flexible rate of local micro-economies to develop, that may give another life to communities and heritage. That builds value both from a neighbourhood perspective as well as create real estate value.

How can these projects be cleverly integrated into urban renewal; drivers to create public value and new experiences? With expanded cultural and employment possibilities. Could a meanwhile-strategic-approach ensure that urban development and building projects become less exposed to “the unpredictable gamechangers” (such as Covid-19) and instead have the potential to drive innovation and community engagement?
