Think Tank 015

The Poetics of Wood – solid timber construction & inspiration in wood

This Think Tank sets out to further investigate how wood and solid timber technology could be used as a means of achieving material sustainability in the built environment and urban fabric of our cities.

Timber construction has the potential to supply one of the few renewable resources to contemporary architectural practice. Timber buildings reflect multiple possibilities with inherent benefits such as flexibility, lightness, good acoustic conditions, rational assembly, and singular massiveness.

People in general seem to have a direct relationship to wood, a material that is both soft and robust, warm and adaptive at the same time. New construction methods using cross laminated timber (CLT) are flexible, lightweight and faster to assemble than any other compatible system.

The gain in ecological footprint and reduced carbon dioxide emissions produced by timber construction seem to be of pivotal importance. The technology may easily be adopted and carried out by various communities globally; communities of varied cultural, financial and technological backgrounds.

The increased use of wood raises demands for and expectations of sustainable forestry, one of the major focal points to be achieved to fulfil the internationally agreed UN global climate goals

The Forest of Venice

KS designs an exhibition at the Biennale Architettura 2016 in Venice

Urbanity, architecture, forest, wood and climate; are the focal points for Sweden’s contribution to the Venice Biennale 2016

The Forests of Venice, Collateral Event of the 15th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. Serra dei Giardini.

The Swedish exhibition The Forests of Venice has been officially selected as a Collateral Event during the Venice International Architecture Exhibition. The initiative brings together some of Sweden’s most prominent architectural firms, highlighting wood as a building material and illustrates the interaction between nature and habitat for addressing climate change with limited resources.

The Forests of Venice is initiated and produced by Kjellander Sjöberg and Folkhem with the support of the Swedish Institute. The exhibition is curated by Jan Åman, and is supported by Swedish Wood, Sveaskog and Martinsons.

The exhibition is housed in Serra dei Giardini, a greenhouse built in 1894 and situated between the Biennale’s two main exhibition areas – Giardini and Arsenale. The exhibition takes the city of Venice’s origin and situation as a point of departure, drawing similarities to contemporary times when climate change and rising sea levels pose a global problem of flooding to threatened towns and densely populated coastal areas worldwide.

In dialogue with the Doge’s Palace; one of the city’s most public buildings and symbol of its representative government – Kjellander Sjöberg have created a pavilion installation of solid wood which sits alongside the greenhouse in the garden. The Forests of Venice continues inside the greenhouse where seven selected architectural firms – Architects without Borders-SE, Arrhov Frick, DinellJohansson, Horn.Uggla, In Praise of Shadows, Carmen Izquierdo and Urbio – speculate on how classical Venetian architecture and urban elements can be reformulated into strategies for our time using wood as the main building material.

The exhibition The Forests of Venice connecting to the Biennial theme Reporting from the Front, which explores the architect’s role in the struggle to improve the living conditions of people worldwide.

Our host for Serra dei Giardini is Microclima.

The Forests of Venice is open from May 28 until September 18, 2016.

KS at Almedalen

The new urban life

Kjellander Sjöberg takes their dicsussion platform Think Tank to Almedalen 2015. This session is about “The new urban life – Better principles, better cities”

What type of urban qualities should we allow for while planning new neighborhoods and improving existing urban environments? What should be included in the public space of the city, who should be able to participate and how? This edition of Think Tank is about the city’s communal spaces as a public resource – about its content and interstitial spaces.

As cities are built more densely, new lifestyles and needs emerge. New programmes, dreams and urban behaviour combine to create new cities, with possibilities to improve social interaction, quality of life and climate issues. Shared public resources must be utilized to their full potential – for multiple uses and activities simultaneously. Boundaries between work, housing, education, leisure and the private and public spheres should be more flexible.

What are the implications of the above on the urban fabric? What role should be assigned to public meeting spaces? Who should have the right to use them? We focus on the social potential, on involving local communities in the planning process, on urban greenery, food and culture. The aim is to achieve a more open and tolerant programming of urban spaces, where spontaneous events and temporary activities can take place, in brief: a generous and rich urban environment.

What are the underlying principles such a city is shaped by?

The focus is on the following driving forces:
Community potential & participation – Christer Larsson, Director of City Planning, Malmö municipality
Food & culture – Jan Åman, Atelier Slice / Atelier Food, founder and cultural entrepreneur
Urban greenery & ecosystem services – Mattias Gustafsson, URBIO, landscape architect and CEO

KS lectures in Stockholm

KTH 8th November 2012 18.00

Open lecture by Ola Kjellander and Stefan Sjöberg at the School of Architecture.

KS presents latest residential projects and shares the experience and thoughts about urban planning. Where is the development going to? How do we create a community? How do we build a sustainable city? Do we need to redefine the concept?

The point of departure of our lecture is the notion of “In Situ”, raising the question of how architects and urban planners can better relate to the existing context and its development, not only in Stockholm.

The lecture is open for public, admission free and doesn’t require any registration.

KS invited to Urban Futures Forum

Round table conversation on new possibilities for sustainable urban development

Kjellander Sjöberg is invited to participate in The Copenhagen Urban Futures Forum to share their knowledge and expertise in sustainable urban development. The organizers are the Danish Ministry of the Environment together with Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and Future Perfect. The Forum is an interactive discussion and consultation with the aim to reach hands on recommendations: liveability and urban form, resource efficiency, climate adaptation, infrastructure, cooperation and sustainable lifestyles.

“We are facing enormous challenges both environmentally and economically, and I truly believe that a greener economy with more focus on resource efficiency, effective solutions for handling climate change, and an overall focus on sustainability is the way forward. It is clear that our cities will be incredibly important in implementing green economy in our everyday lives. If we are to achieve the best results, we have to share our best practices and experiences with other pioneers in sustainable city development. This forum will allow us to get valuable input to our continued work with creating more sustainability in our cities”. – Ida Auken, Minister for Environment, Denmark

Urbanism – the design, development, inhabitation and adaptation of cities – has, across the 20th and early 21st century, become the terrain where most of society’s questions converge. Copenhagen and Denmark have become associated with successful answers to these questions, pioneering models of urban morphology, lifestyle, and economics, blended with long-term commitments to sustainable infrastructure and energy, and social justice and progress.

The Copenhagen Urban Futures Forum is an informal, high-level roundtable on new options for sustainable urban living, to be held Monday 7 October, 2013 for around 40 invited guests in Copenhagen. The event is a consultation initiative of the Danish Ministry of the Environment (MIM) in collaboration with Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), Resource Vision sustainable architects, and the Futureperfect Association (Sweden). Support is also received from the U.S. Embassy to Denmark.

The following are the themes and emerging questions that the Forum will address:

1 Liveability & Urban Form
2 Resource Efficiency & Infrastructure
3 Climate Adaptation
4 Asset-light Living & Internet
5 Business, Trade & Investment

Pro Dialogues

The role of architecture and cities in making a sustainable society could not be more central. The built environment is not only the single most intensive concentration of materials that society manipulates – including carbon, and energy, minerals, water, waste, and biomass – but it sets the patterns by which people live the their daily lives.

New ways of living, and new systems for the management of materials, natural resources and systems, and business models, are all emerging now in architecture and city design. The speakers will lead us through their work in these areas, and discuss the challenges and opportunities along the road ahead. Some of these include the rebuilding of Kiruna City Centre, a food-focussed block in Årstafältet, using bees to reinforce urban ecosystem resilience, and more.

Speakers for the Architecture and Cities Pro Dialogue include:
Karolina Lisslö, Bee Urban
Krister Lindstedt, White Arkitekter
Anna Edblom, White Arkitekter
Anna Denell, Vasakronan
