KS wins competition for Sala Backe in Uppsala

KS has, together with the client Genova Property Group, won a land allocation competition for a new city block in Sala Backe, Uppsala. The Tunet block consists of four independent buildings designed by Kjellander Sjöberg in cross-laminated timber that link, enrich and help define the cityscape. Sala Backe today contains a green network of parks, tree-lined streets and green courtyards. The new buildings become a part of this, and create a series of urban spaces in a green and varied environment. The houses have rational plans, with a functional core and outer apartment and balcony-zones that can easily be rearranged to suit future needs. The ground floor is provided with generous commercial spaces, which – like the apartments – all face at least two cardinal directions. The buildings are without backs and are closely integrated with streets, yards and the park path – a design that creates a lively cityscape.

KS develops a residential block on the waterfront of Citadellskajen in the heart of Malmö.

Kjellander Sjöberg has, along with Skanska, launched the process of creating a new city block on Citadellskajen in the heart of historic Malmö. The block is uniquely located by the outer moat with exceptional views to the Malmöhus castle. Towards the north, the block borders Neptunigatan, a street planned to be broadened and transformed into a green city boulevard. Citadellskajen thus becomes a new city promenade and a south-facing park extending further to Malmö Live and the Central Station. The project will comprise commercial facilities on the ground level with a restaurant, café and shops as well as 150 residential units. The construction start is planned for 2018. The proposal is a part of an exciting development of Malmö’s old harbor districts; the same area in which Kjellander Sjöberg’s Malmö studio is located.

Design for Bird & Bird

Kjellander Sjöberg has developed a new design concept for Bird & Bird –  a renowned, international law firm with offices in central Stockholm. The commission comprised a transformation of the existing office space from individual cellular offices into a creative and open studio environment emphasizing social spaces, collaboration and team spirit. The various teams and departments are interspersed with shared, flexible spaces as well as silent rooms of various designs. The large terrace running along the building and a representative floor were meticulously furnished. “The custom-made older furniture were recycled, refurbished and have been integrated into a new whole, thus becoming a part of the narrative,” says Sylvia Neiglick, project architect. KS’s design, custom-made furniture and interior solutions were based on Bird & Bird’s international design and graphic identity. Variety in character, colors and furnishings create different zones with different rhythms and activities.

Think Tank 015

The Poetics of Wood – solid timber construction & inspiration in wood

This Think Tank sets out to further investigate how wood and solid timber technology could be used as a means of achieving material sustainability in the built environment and urban fabric of our cities.

Timber construction has the potential to supply one of the few renewable resources to contemporary architectural practice. Timber buildings reflect multiple possibilities with inherent benefits such as flexibility, lightness, good acoustic conditions, rational assembly, and singular massiveness.

People in general seem to have a direct relationship to wood, a material that is both soft and robust, warm and adaptive at the same time. New construction methods using cross laminated timber (CLT) are flexible, lightweight and faster to assemble than any other compatible system.

The gain in ecological footprint and reduced carbon dioxide emissions produced by timber construction seem to be of pivotal importance. The technology may easily be adopted and carried out by various communities globally; communities of varied cultural, financial and technological backgrounds.

The increased use of wood raises demands for and expectations of sustainable forestry, one of the major focal points to be achieved to fulfil the internationally agreed UN global climate goals

Kjellander Sjöberg awarded 1st prize for design competition in Riddersvik garden city

Kjellander Sjöberg has in collaboration with Wallfast won a land transfer competition in Riddersvik in Stockholm. The area around the old plant nursery is being transformed into a modern garden city, consisting of 600 housing units in mixed forms of tenure. The jury favoured quality over price-tag when awarding the eight chosen developers who are to build the green and intimately-scaled neighbourhood. 32 design proposals were submitted in total for the various competition areas. The municipality set fixed prices for the land transfer and the proposals were therefore judged solely on the quality of the architectural design, the housing qualities, and how well the term “garden city” was interpreted. KS’s proposal comprises 100 mixed tenure units.

Kjellander Sjöberg nominated for the Housing Prize 2016 by Architects Sweden

The project Fittja Terraces has been nominated for the Housing Prize 2016, annually awarded by Architects Sweden, with the motivation: “The design shows a possible way of working with standardized building elements – an affordable construction method selected in order to give locals possibilities to own their own dwellings. The architectural expression and the local plan are both designed to endorse future additions and the residents can influence the layout and number of rooms in their homes.

The project Fittja Terraces represents the area’s first new production of housing for the selling market and is a welcomed addition to the large existing rental housing stock built in the 1970’s. The new buildings create a clearly integrated lively strip between the local centre and Fittja Äng further down towards the water. The environment becomes a small-scale urban addition with social opportunities, emphasizing variation and a rich diversity of housing types and sizes.

The Housing Prize is issued annually by Architects Sweden, rewarding recently completed residential projects of high architectural quality. The jury takes into consideration living qualities, good execution processes, tradition and international influence as well as how technical innovations are designed. The aim is to stimulate and broaden the knowledge of excellent residential projects in Sweden.

Fittja Terraces offers alternative form of housing in terms of size, price and quality, and strives for creating opportunities for a housing career locally. The broadness and diversity is created through focusing on small apartments, bigger households with many rooms for large families and possibilities for multigenerational homes in the area. The project proved to be very popular – all dwellings were sold to mainly local residents in a very short time.

Through a deliberate focus on mixing different sizes of households, types of accommodation and by providing a complement to the area’s homogeneous nature – in terms of both content and architecture – Fittja Terraces are a step towards social sustainability in Botkyrka.
