Kjellander Sjöberg launches new visual identity

Kjellander Sjöberg has developed a new visual identity in collaboration with Burgess & Beech, a London-based graphic design practice. KS is constantly developing and growing; we are an innovative, international, creative, ethical and engaged architectural practice and it was therefore natural to update our graphic identity to reflect this.

For KS it is very important to further strengthen our active role within the architectural and urban design discourse, as well as reaching out to the industry and to interested members of the public, both in Sweden and internationally.

Remove clutter
We work with design on a daily basis, and therefore have very high expectations on our own graphic products. All excess elements have been removed by introducing a clear and simple logotype, developed with the motto ‘remove clutter’. The objective of the change was to clearly convey Kjellander Sjöberg’s core values through the visual language. The dialogue and journey with Burgess & Beech has been exciting and we are very happy with the outcome. We hope that you will enjoy our new visual language as much as we do!

Magnolia square stage one of a new neighbourhood

KS develops in southern Stockholm

With a variation of streets, squares and parks, Magnolia Square is the first stage of a new mixed-use urban district in Stora Sköndal. Kjellander Sjöberg have been appointed to design the urban space together with the building volumes and procurement of the overall quality program.

The proposed plan, which has been earmarked for approval in 2017, sets the foundations for a larger development of an inclusive neighbourhood with clear links to the surrounding area and the region’s existing cultural milieu. Lively and active urban spaces are generated through the collection of sensitive building forms, walking-speed streets, pocket parks and squares. Sköndal’s exiting public services provide a platform for the proposed additions to develop further.

The current planning stage for the site consists of a mix of rental and owner apartments, health care and nursing homes as well as office and commercial space. The project team also includes Landskapslaget who have been appointed for the design and development of the landscaping, and real estate developers EBAB. Magnolia Square is a collaborative initiative between Stiftelsen Stora Sköndal (as client) and the City of Stockholm.

Venice Next, FORM

This year’s curator of the Biennale has requested architecture from the front. But the team behind the Nordic Pavilion doesn’t seem to take the theme seriously.

“The initiator behind the Swedish exhibition The Forests of Venice has taken the matter seriously. The architect office Kjellander Sjöberg, the building company Folkhem and the curator Jan Åman put wood as a sustainable building material into a context, more exactly the innovative history of Venice – the sinking city that was rescued from the swamp death by millions of trees.”

KS awarded first prize in design innovation competition

Sege Park presents possibilities for reduced resource consumption

The project It Takes a Block has been announced as the winner for the design innovation competition – The Nordic Built City Challenge – for the Swedish site in Sege Park in Malmö. The proposal has been developed by Kjellander Sjöberg along with the Danish landscape practices Sted and BOGL, Atkins consultancy, Platspilot and students from LTH. It presents affordable housing based on climate-smart and community-based solutions for liveable and sustainable smart cities.

The winning proposal combines a number of strategies in order to support a sustainable lifestyle with a focus on sharing as a way to reduce resource consumption. There are several common facilities within the urban block, such as a canteen and a cultural centre. The roof terraces are equipped with greenhouses and a water centre with a bath and a laundry room. These shared functions and spaces allow for smaller living spaces whilst maintaining or even improving the living quality.

Open and flexible spaces connected to space-efficient functions are a common theme for both the indoor and outdoor design. The residents are encouraged to use the block and living areas as efficiently and innovatively as possible to suit their needs.

The prize was awarded during the Nordic Built Cities Benchmarking Forum in Helsinki.

The design is inspired by the site’s industrial architecture and a former cement plant. The project is a well-integrated addition to the urban fabric, with a vertical division, expressing the individual staircase units. The vision is to create a building for people of all ages – the apartments vary in size, ranging from compact youth housing to larger duplex apartments for families.

Gjutarängen has been carried out in a construction partnering environment between developer Uppsalahem, contractor Skanska, Kjellander Sjöberg and other stakeholders.

The Forest of Venice

KS designs an exhibition at the Biennale Architettura 2016 in Venice

Urbanity, architecture, forest, wood and climate; are the focal points for Sweden’s contribution to the Venice Biennale 2016

The Forests of Venice, Collateral Event of the 15th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. Serra dei Giardini.

The Swedish exhibition The Forests of Venice has been officially selected as a Collateral Event during the Venice International Architecture Exhibition. The initiative brings together some of Sweden’s most prominent architectural firms, highlighting wood as a building material and illustrates the interaction between nature and habitat for addressing climate change with limited resources.

The Forests of Venice is initiated and produced by Kjellander Sjöberg and Folkhem with the support of the Swedish Institute. The exhibition is curated by Jan Åman, and is supported by Swedish Wood, Sveaskog and Martinsons.

The exhibition is housed in Serra dei Giardini, a greenhouse built in 1894 and situated between the Biennale’s two main exhibition areas – Giardini and Arsenale. The exhibition takes the city of Venice’s origin and situation as a point of departure, drawing similarities to contemporary times when climate change and rising sea levels pose a global problem of flooding to threatened towns and densely populated coastal areas worldwide.

In dialogue with the Doge’s Palace; one of the city’s most public buildings and symbol of its representative government – Kjellander Sjöberg have created a pavilion installation of solid wood which sits alongside the greenhouse in the garden. The Forests of Venice continues inside the greenhouse where seven selected architectural firms – Architects without Borders-SE, Arrhov Frick, DinellJohansson, Horn.Uggla, In Praise of Shadows, Carmen Izquierdo and Urbio – speculate on how classical Venetian architecture and urban elements can be reformulated into strategies for our time using wood as the main building material.

The exhibition The Forests of Venice connecting to the Biennial theme Reporting from the Front, which explores the architect’s role in the struggle to improve the living conditions of people worldwide.

Our host for Serra dei Giardini is Microclima.

The Forests of Venice is open from May 28 until September 18, 2016.
