New Eriksberg

The child optimized community

Kjellander Sjöberg has, in collaboration with Urbio, Urban Minds and Iterio, developed a playful child optimized urban planning proposal in the invited competition for New Eriksberg in Uppsala, commissioned by Uppsalahem.

Eriksberg is a popular neighbourhood in central Uppsala, built in the late 50’s. Forthcoming renovations of Uppsalahem’s portfolio of 1,500 homes and a proposed addition of 2,000 new homes, offer an opportunity for innovation and sustainable urban development where a holistic approach is requested. A development that is careful, transparent and democratic, in dialogue form, where the existing values are maintained and enhanced.

Our vision for New Eriksberg involves a long-term process aimed at creating a vibrant community with diversity, green qualities and liveability. The area will have a varied content with potential for different types of businesses, residences, residents and lifestyles. Through mixing forms of tenures, creating a variety in urban spaces, buildings and architecture from different periods, a rich and complex neighbourhood will emerge from a forward-looking and robust strategy. First prize at Årstafältet

KS proposal Postgården goes forward

Now it is clear that Kjellander Sjöberg’s proposal for the second stage of the urban development of Årstafältet, Postgården, continues after completing the competition. The block of about 90 residential units is a standalone “superblock” located at the neighbourhood’s new square. KS has, together with the developer Sundsvall designed a building that will be a clear focus point on the site’s southeastern side, in the background of Årstafältet active park. The block lands on the site with an open public ground floor that house different functions. It contains a variety of apartment types both for the rental and the sales market.

From the assessment team motivation:
“City Life: The proposal is very strong in its relationship to the square and the street. With the addition of housing and commercial space that spill out onto the street, opportunities are created for street life meeting more private living spaces. Garden spaces as entrances create a welcoming home.
Architectural quality: The staggered positioning of the buildings creates an intriguing volume which is clearly visible from the park. The proposal provides good living qualities with many double-sided apartments.” – Åke Sundevall, City Planning and Development Office in Stockholm.

KS lectures in Stockholm

KTH 8th November 2012 18.00

Open lecture by Ola Kjellander and Stefan Sjöberg at the School of Architecture.

KS presents latest residential projects and shares the experience and thoughts about urban planning. Where is the development going to? How do we create a community? How do we build a sustainable city? Do we need to redefine the concept?

The point of departure of our lecture is the notion of “In Situ”, raising the question of how architects and urban planners can better relate to the existing context and its development, not only in Stockholm.

The lecture is open for public, admission free and doesn’t require any registration.

“The Edible Block” can become a reality in Årsta!

Grow your own vegetables, buy sourdough bread on the corner, prepare dinner at the local restaurant and enjoy extended sharing of goods, services and space. “The Edible Block” is an expression of a green wave among architects, but in a radically updated version; A version of collective housing that gives back to the city. The apartments are proposed to be smaller and more space efficient than we have been accustomed to in recent years. More space can instead be planned in to common areas. “We are facing enormous challenges both environmentally and economically, and I truly believe that a greener economy with more focus on resource efficiency, effective solutions for handling climate change, and an overall focus on sustainability is the way forward. It is clear that our cities will be incredibly important in implementing green economy in our everyday lives. If we are to achieve the best results, we have to share our best practices and experiences with other pioneers in sustainable city development. This forum will allow us to get valuable input to our continued work with creating more sustainability in our cities”. – Ida Auken, Minister for Environment, Denmark

Urbanism – the design, development, inhabitation and adaptation of cities – has, across the 20th and early 21st century, become the terrain where most of society’s questions converge. The Copenhagen Urban Futures Forum is an informal, high-level roundtable on new options for sustainable urban living, to be held Monday 7 October, 2013 for around 40 invited guests in Copenhagen. The event is a consultation initiative of the Danish Ministry of the Environment (MIM) in collaboration with Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), Resource Vision sustainable architects, and the Futureperfect Association (Sweden). Support is also received from the U.S. Embassy to Denmark.

The following are the themes and emerging questions that the Forum will address:

Pro Dialogues

The role of architecture and cities in making a sustainable society could not be more central. The built environment is not only the single most intensive concentration of materials that society manipulates – including carbon, and energy, minerals, water, waste, and biomass – but it sets the patterns by which people live the their daily lives.

New ways of living, and new systems for the management of materials, natural resources and systems, and business models, are all emerging now in architecture and city design. The speakers will lead us through their work in these areas, and discuss the challenges and opportunities along the road ahead. Some of these include the rebuilding of Kiruna City Centre, a food-focussed block in Årstafältet, using bees to reinforce urban ecosystem resilience, and more.

Speakers for the Architecture and Cities Pro Dialogue include:
Karolina Lisslö, Bee Urban
Krister Lindstedt, White Arkitekter
Anna Edblom, White Arkitekter
Anna Denell, Vasakronan
Alexander Ståhle, Spacescape
