Hästholmssundet

Gräddviken together with Hästholmssundet form the sixth phase in the urban development project Kvarnholmen in the Nacka municipality. The area has a great potential to become an attractive urban environment. The strongest qualities of the place are its waterfront location by Svindersviken, the dramatic topography towards the south, and the Stockholm inlet, which offers great vistas and good light conditions. The main objective of the plan is to develop a vibrant and varied district, where the existing qualities of the site are embraced and new pathways, destination points, and programs are established, benefitting urban life.

KS’s urban design commission – master plan, urban spaces and green qualities

Kjellander Sjöberg won the competition to design Gäddviken – Hästholmssundet’s new masterplan in 2013 together with the landscape architecture practice Urbio.  The onward commission from Kvarnholmen Utvecklings AB comprises developing a new urban environment by a master plan, housing volumes, infrastructure system, urban spaces and public meeting spots. The ongoing planning process with the Nacka municipality is scheduled for public consultation during 2024.

Objective and overall urban development principles: An attractive dynamic urban environment

Kjellander Sjöberg’s proposal originates from a flexible pattern of urban fabric that presents new views, connects, and creates close proximity to the water both from public places and new city blocks. The configuration forms radial streets which link the dramatic topography of Finnberget with the quay level. Kvarnholmsvägen’s new street design with a new bridge towards the Kvarnholmen island improves the capacity and relations to the new street network. Important public aspects are boardwalks with recreational- and preschool areas, a central park, and the potential of a mixed program. Goals for the development are to establish new possibilities to manage the previously industrial land and to invest in public facilities. The project puts focus on creating qualitative experiences through sustainable storm water management solutions and a good micro climate.
